Today we cancel a movie, tomorrow our freedom?

Francisco Miraval

My son, a college student focusing on creating writing and movie reviews, wrote this commentary about the cancelation of the release of The Interview:

On December 25th, 2014, a new movie was set to release nationwide here in America. This movie is a comedy about two people who have their own tabloid TV show. The two are given the chance to meet with the North Korean leader. Upon hearing this, the CIA recruits the two to assassinate him. This movie will no longer be released. Why?

Because an organization known as “The Guardians of Peace” (GOP) have threatened 9/11 style attacks on anyone who goes and sees this movie. I may be mistaken, but aren’t 9/11 style attacks the exact opposite of peace?

The GOP recently hacked into Sony’s filed revealing quite a bit about the company and has certainly caused several headaches. However, by causing the movie to be pulled from all theaters nationwide, this is no longer an attack on Sony, this is an attack on all of us. That may sound dramatic, but it’s also very true.

America is meant to be the example country when it comes to Freedom and Opportunity. Seth Rogan had the opportunity to make this film and he took it. Not showing his work eliminates our freedom and opportunity. This is just a movie, but if we allow this, what will it become tomorrow?

This isn’t even the first instance North Korea has been made fun or antagonized in the media. In fact, we also make fun of Russians, Nazis and zombies. It’s all meant for us to waste a bit of time and keep going. And this movie is just a comedy!

I in no way condone the killing of another human being, I simply don’t agree with such an act. I do agree with the basis that America was founded upon: freedom and opportunity. That is why we can watch soccer every Saturday and football every Sunday. That is why we can send our kids to school and have them pick their choice of college. That is why we can complain about how some celebrities make stupid decisions and laugh at how others joke about them.

That is why we don’t cower to air sirens, or have tanks patrolling the streets. That is why you can go to the church, the synagogue or wherever you please. That is why you can study what you want to study, teach what you want to teach.

That is why this movie should still show. No matter how bad our problems may seem or how terrible some will say the state of the country looks to be, we are still free and now we have the opportunity to show that nobody will take away our freedom.

North Korea may be described as an insane country. The things going on there on a daily basis are absolutely atrocious. It’s a shame those things are happening. But it is also shameful to let the terrorists win.
